Ex-NFL player and Hyattsville restaurateur shot in robbery

Tobias Dorzon, a former NFL player who transitioned to a career as a chef and restaurateur, was one of two people shot during an attempted robbery on Tuesday night in Prince George’s County, Maryland, according to a county council member.

Hyattsville police reported the incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the 2500 block of Kirkwood Place. Dorzon and a woman were returning home from dinner when four suspects exited another vehicle driven by a fifth individual and opened fire, discharging dozens of rounds.

“Both were struck multiple times,” said Police Chief Jarod Towers. The suspects then approached Dorzon, took some of his belongings, and fled in a white SUV crossover with a sunroof.

Both victims survived but were hospitalized with serious injuries. Towers described the shooting as a “tragic, heinous, violent offense” and vowed to seek justice.

County Council member Wanika Fisher expressed her support, calling the incident a “senseless act” and sending wishes for recovery to both victims. Fisher emphasized Dorzon’s role as a community leader, adding that this incident affects the perception of safety in the area.

Dorzon, who owns Huncho House and 1123 By Chef Tobias in Hyattsville, has appeared on several food-centric reality TV shows, including Chopped and Tournament of Champions. Earlier this year, he was awarded Chef of the Year by the Restaurant Association of Maryland, making him the first Prince George’s County native to receive the honor.

Fisher praised Dorzon’s contributions, noting his impact on the community and efforts to revitalize University Town Center. “It’s heartbreaking that this happened in a place he calls home,” she said.
