A woman involved in a Maryland carjacking died late Saturday after being hit by two vehicles on Interstate 495 while attempting to flee from police in Prince George’s County, according to the state attorney general’s office.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fatal incident occurred on February 1, when officers encountered a stolen car around 8 p.m. in the parking lot of a business on the 6000 block of Oxon Hill Road.
The vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day, according to a statement from the attorney general’s office.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, got into the car and drove off, triggering a pursuit involving officers from Prince George’s County Police, Forest Heights Police, and Edmonston Police.
Despite multiple attempts by police to stop the vehicle, the woman eventually crashed in another parking lot in Oxon Hill.
Authorities say she then attempted to flee on foot by crossing the Beltway but was fatally struck by two vehicles. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of both vehicles remained on-site.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division and the Maryland State Police crash team are handling the investigation.
