CALVERT COUNTY, Md. — A Calvert County Sheriff’s deputy is in the hospital after a car crash while assisting with a road closure.
On Monday evening, fire crews were responding to a fire along the 1400 block of North Solomons Island Road. Around 6:15 p.m., deputies arrived to help shut down the road and manage traffic.
Deputy Gavin Shuart positioned his police vehicle at the intersection of North Solomons Island Road and Buckler Road to block the roadway and redirect drivers. During this time, an 87-year-old man driving a 2021 Toyota RAV4 northbound on Solomons Island Road collided with the deputy’s vehicle.
Emergency responders rushed Deputy Shuart to a trauma center, where he remains in critical condition. The driver of the RAV4 was also hospitalized in critical condition.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
