Frederick, Md. — A Frederick Police Department officer has been charged in Pennsylvania with multiple offenses, including two counts of soliciting a minor, one count of possessing child pornography, and one count of criminal use of a communication device. The officer has been identified as Corporal James Dodson.
“These are extremely disturbing allegations against a member of our department,” said Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando in a statement released via YouTube. “The behavior described in these charges is reprehensible, indefensible, and violates the core values sworn to by every officer in our agency.”
According to the department, concerns about potential criminal misconduct were raised by an officer in August 2024 and reported to command staff. Because the alleged offenses occurred in Pennsylvania, authorities there were notified, and the Pennsylvania State Police launched an investigation.
Charges were officially filed against Dodson on Monday. Chief Lando confirmed that Dodson’s suspension—which was already in effect—will remain in place throughout the legal process. “Let me be absolutely clear,” Lando stated. “If these allegations are proven true in court, Mr. Dodson will have no future in law enforcement or within the Frederick Police Department. We will ensure accountability and allow justice to run its course.”
As part of the suspension, Dodson has been stripped of his police powers. His badge, service weapon, and department-issued vehicle have been confiscated.
The Frederick Police Department has also initiated an internal administrative review in collaboration with the Montgomery County Police Department. Officials say they will share more information with the public once the review is complete.
“I’m proud of the many law enforcement professionals—officers and civilians—who commit themselves daily to doing what’s right,” Lando added. “No one despises corruption in law enforcement more than those who serve with integrity. Every dishonest act stains the reputation of our entire profession and weakens the public trust we work so hard to build.”
A press conference regarding the matter is scheduled for Thursday, July 3, at 4:00 p.m. outside Frederick Police Department headquarters, located at 100 West Patrick Street.
