FREDERICK, MD – While most demonstrations throughout Frederick remained peaceful on Thursday evening, a group of around 20 individuals sparked violence near Fourth Street and North Market Street, leading to four arrests and multiple charges, including assaults on police officers.
According to the Frederick Police Department, protests were held citywide as citizens exercised their First Amendment rights. Authorities thanked the majority of demonstrators for remaining peaceful and cooperative. However, trouble erupted around 8:45 p.m. when a group—many dressed in black and wearing gas masks or goggles—began striking passing vehicles with umbrellas, creating a safety hazard and disrupting traffic.
Police who attempted to calm the situation were met with aggression. One officer was hit in the head with a thrown object, while another was struck in the groin with a metal pole. Investigators recovered fireworks, laser pointers, spray paint, and other items likely intended to damage property or interfere with law enforcement. A nearby building window was also found shattered.
“These individuals didn’t come to protest; they came to cause harm,” said Police Chief Jason Lando. “We fully support lawful, peaceful protest—but criminal acts like assault and property destruction will not be tolerated.”
Four residents of Frederick were arrested and now face charges including rioting, disturbing the peace, obstructing police, and assault on law enforcement:
-
Joseph Eastwood (33) – multiple charges including second-degree assault on an officer
-
Andromeda Weir (25) – riot-related offenses
-
Joshua Louis Gainey (39) – three counts of assault on officers
-
Jayla Maddison Draghici (25) – several charges, including assault on law enforcement
Police are continuing to investigate and say more charges may follow. Anyone with additional information, photos, or video is asked to contact Frederick Police at 301-600-2102 or submit anonymous tips via 301-600-TIPS.
