CHEVY CHASE, Md. — Following a court-ordered mental health evaluation, a Chevy Chase mother accused of drowning her 3-month-old daughter has been deemed incompetent to stand trial.
Mackenzie Colgan, 37, was arrested on Dec. 8 after her infant daughter died during a bath. According to investigators, Colgan admitted to police that she had woken up that morning with a plan to “end everything.”
Court documents reveal Colgan informed family members she was going to bathe the baby. Roughly 20 minutes later, she returned and told her husband the child was dead. He rushed upstairs, found the baby still in the bathtub, attempted CPR, and called 911.
Emergency responders arrived at the home on the 7300 block of Summit Avenue just after noon. The unresponsive infant was found in the upstairs bathroom and transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
During questioning, Colgan confessed to holding the infant’s head underwater. She also disclosed that her plan included killing her husband, older child, and herself. After climbing onto a second-story window ledge, she said she decided not to proceed with her suicide attempt.
Colgan has been remanded to the Department of Health, where she is expected to remain for several months. A status hearing will be scheduled in the future to evaluate whether she is fit to stand trial.
