Montgomery County Transit Employee Arrested for Assaulting Pregnant Woman

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — A Montgomery County Transit employee is facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly strangling and assaulting a pregnant woman outside a Ride On bus in Chevy Chase.

Paul Simms, 36, of Laurel, was arrested Tuesday after Montgomery County Police reviewed video footage showing him arguing with the woman before the attack.

According to police, the confrontation escalated, leading Simms to strangle and physically assault the victim before throwing her to the ground.

Emergency responders arrived at the 5400 block of Wisconsin Avenue on Monday following the incident. Authorities have not yet provided an update on the woman’s condition.

Simms faces four charges, including first- and second-degree assault, a crime of violence against a pregnant person, and reckless endangerment. He is currently being held at the county detention center’s central processing unit, awaiting a bond hearing.

Officials say Simms turned himself in after police obtained a warrant for his arrest on Tuesday.
