Russian aircraft damages US drone flying over Syria

Russia’s military damaged a U.S. drone that was flying over Syria on Sunday, after it flew dangerously near and fired flares at the aircraft, U.S. officials said.

United States Air Forces Central said Tuesday that the incident took place as the U.S. MQ-9, an unmanned aerial vehicle, was conducting a mission targeting ISIS forces.

“On July 23 Russian military aircraft deployed flares, damaging a U.S. MQ-9 while conducting a defeat-ISIS mission. For the full statement by Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, Commander, 9th AF (AFCENT) visit,” US AFCENT said on Twitter.
