WASHINGTON — Powerful thunderstorms swept through Prince George’s County on Wednesday evening, causing widespread damage, including downed trees and power lines that created hazardous conditions.
The Prince George’s County Fire Department responded to multiple scenes impacted by the storm, including:
-
516 Mentor Ave.
-
1004 Balboa Ave.
-
Old Central Avenue and Suffolk
-
1516 Brook Road
While officials confirmed dangerous conditions at these sites, they did not provide detailed descriptions of the hazards.
Around 6 p.m., reports also came in of fallen trees blocking parts of I-95 and the inner loop of I-495 southbound. Emergency crews responded, and two right lanes were closed to clear the debris, leading to traffic delays stretching up to five miles.
In Capitol Heights, former Council Member Caroline Brown witnessed severe storm damage in her neighborhood, including large downed trees. The extent of the destruction led her to speculate whether a tornado may have touched down.
Clean-up operations are currently underway, and updates will be provided as more information is released.
