WALDORF, Md. — Authorities in Charles County are investigating after discovering that QR codes used for parking payments at Regency Furniture Stadium were altered to redirect users to a fraudulent website.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) issued a warning after the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team reported suspicious activity involving parking transactions at the stadium on St. Linus Drive.
According to investigators, someone modified the QR codes on parking signs to point to an unauthorized third-party site where unsuspecting users submitted credit card payments — bypassing the official payment system.
Team officials said they were unaware of the fraudulent redirection, noting that payments made through other methods were processed normally.
It remains unknown how long the altered QR codes were in place or how many people may have unknowingly made payments through the fake site.
Anyone who recently used a QR code to pay for parking at the stadium is encouraged to check their credit card statements for any suspicious charges. Those who suspect they’ve been affected should contact Detective Sergeant Hemsley at (301) 609-6562.
CCSO confirmed that all tampered signs have been removed, and detectives are actively working with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs organization as the investigation continues.
