MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A mechanical failure sparked a tractor-trailer fire on the Capital Beltway in Maryland early Tuesday morning, leading to lane closures and traffic delays.
Firefighters responded to the westbound lanes of Interstate 495 between New Hampshire Avenue and University Boulevard around 1:30 a.m., where they found a tractor-trailer engulfed in flames. The truck was carrying imported fruit, according to a department spokesperson.
To contain the fire, authorities initially shut down three right lanes. By 6:15 a.m., two lanes had reopened, but delays continued during the morning commute. All lanes were fully reopened by 7 a.m.
Investigators believe a mechanical issue caused a brake fire, leading to the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
